Piking 2012: Convention Update

Convention 35th Badge

This year’s Convention is probably as far north as we have ventured so hopefully it will give many of the folks at that end of the country the chance to attend their first ever Convention and I’m quite sure they won’t be disappointed.

Once again we have selected a top quality venue “The Pavilions of Harrogate”. Harrogate is in North Yorkshire and is situated about 200 miles from London, almost midway between London and Edinburgh and between Liverpool and Hull. It is easily accessible by road, rail, bus and air with regular connections from all over the UK.

To help you plan your visit to Harrogate visit Transport Direct, which is a free journey planner providing national coverage and advice about all types of transport.

By road, via A1(M), from south -M1- A1(M),from North- A1(M), from East-M621-A1(M), from West-M56-M62-A1(M), Exit A1(M) at junction 47 and follow Harrogate A59, then A658 and then A661. At the traffic lights on the A661 next to the Sainsbury store turn left into Railway Road and follow signs to Pavilions of Harrogate. Car parking is, again, free, and once again we have a café and bar on site, so you can relax with a pint or over a meal, meet long lost pals or make new friends.

Convention Pavilions

This year we once again have four top quality Pike Anglers who have caught between them… wait for it… one thousand two hundred and seventy-four twenty pounders, forty-three thirty pounders and two forty pounders, every one of them giving their time for all pike anglers to see and hear them. The PAC convention is the only place where you will have a chance to see anything quite like it.

This year we have not three but four amazing speakers; first up will be Gloucestershire pike ace and editor of online magazine “Esox World”, no stranger to the big fish world, Steve Rowley.
Steve’s talk is “My Esox World”… not a plug for his online magazine but a mixture of topics; he describes how his own personal way of fishing has developed over the years and, on topics close to his heart, Steve tells how he feels modern technology is having an impact on today’s sport; he is concerned too about the youngsters of today and about how we can try to draw them into our sport. This is a talk that will be truly interesting, so don’t be late or you could miss out.

Convention Room

The second talk of the day is entitled “Pike Fishing Here and There” by the former PAC President and long time PAC member, Phil Wakeford. Phil will talk us through his many trips to the Irish Loughs in the pursuit of big pike, plus trips to such diverse places as the Baltic Sea, as well as catching that personal best forty pound fish from Chew Valley Lake. Phil will also be launching his new book with the same title as his talk; the book will be on sale on the day, and during his talk he will be mentioning excerpts from the book.

This year we will not be having Neville Fickling’s panel for the simple reason that Neville will be giving us a unique talk entitled “Fifty Years of Pike Fishing” in which he will be looking back over those many decades of experience. Over the years he has worked tirelessly for pike fishing and the PAC, served as General Secretary for the PAC from 1988 to 1991, has been editor and columnist for top predator magazines, and is also the author of many top selling predator books. Neville is possibly one of the best known predator anglers of today.

To complete this brilliant array of speakers we have the well known top Irish pike angler Alistair Rawlings, with a talk entitled “Eire In Some Highlights”. Alistair will be touching on his successful methods on those big Irish waters, plus those special red letter days. This could be your one and only chance to hear and chat to Alistair.

Once again Eric Edwards has a line up of top angling coaches for the younger generation – see News for more details.

As usual the angling trade will be there supporting us with loads of tackle and deals to be had.

The Tackle Shop, Zoota Lures, Baitbox-Pike Pro, Zandavan Products, Catfishing UK, Mick Brown Angling, DG fishing, Chico’s Lures, D L Specialist Tackle, Fenland Pike, The Pike Shop, Waterwolf Ltd, Lynx Fishing, Pike and Predator magazine, Ultra Light Lures, Budgie Burgess, E T Specialist Pike Fishing Tackle, Karen Sarkar Art, David Miller Art. In this world of ever increasing prices I have bucked the trend by keeping the entrance prices the same at £10 for members – please have your membership card with you. Juniors under sixteen have free entry if accompanied by an adult. For non members it’s £15 with a £5 refund if you join on the day. The date for your diary is 22 September. Doors open at 9am.
